Coke Action Group (CAG) is a broad coalition of campus and community organizations in Urbana Champaign. We are concerned about the human rights, environmental and labor violations committed by the Coca-Cola corporation and we believe that Coca-Cola has a responsibility toward the rights and safety of all workers and people who get affected by Coke policies and bottling plants.
Recent news of the violence against workers at Coca–Cola bottling facilities in Turkey, or reports about water depletion in India as a result of Coke’s extraction of ground water add to various reports from Coca-Cola workers around the world that suggest a pattern of human rights abuse.
As students and campus community, we make up a significant consumer base for Coca-Cola products thanks to the exclusive beverage contract between University of Illinois and Coke. We believe academic spaces should promote socially just thinking and should not subsidize human rights violations.
